At the current rate of progress, women in England will experience the gender pay gap until 2059. In London, gender pay parity won’t be reached until 2148. The UK ranks 18th out of 33 OECD states when it comes to gender equality in the workplace.
52% of women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. 12% of working mothers lose their jobs for getting pregnant or for taking maternity leave. 1 in 10 women going through the menopause leave the workforce.
In two-thirds of UK households women do more than their fair share of household chores, and 59% of unpaid carers are female.
Women in the UK experience an overall gender wealth gap of 35%, a gender private pension wealth gap of 90%, and a gender stocks and shares wealth gap of 177%.
1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, and 41% of girls aged 14-17 report experiencing sexual violence from an intimate partner. On average, a woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every five days, and an estimated three women a week die by suicide as a result of domestic abuse.
Clearly, progress on gender equality is far too slow. We want everyone to be well informed about women’s rights, and understand the steps needed to create a society where all women are respected and treated fairly.
